Classroom Observation #5
What surprised
you?
What caught my attention while observing the classroom of school D was their usage of the classroom space and the materials they used. I noticed that many of the materials used are housed in small drawers or containers and are often filled to a large quantity. Along with this, I noticed that the walls had numerous shelfs of different sizes that accommodated both student works and class materials. These areas appeared to me to be filled but also diverse since so many different items were housed on this one side of the classroom. These observations made me consider how one organizes their room to maintain an efficient environment but also one that facilitates movement. I was also made to consider how we can use everyday items to create art spaces in an effective but cost efficient manner as well when I observed students using Q-tips as a blending tool.
What did you
learn?
Things I learned during this day:
- Students can apply to join both the middle and high school
- A steady light source can be made from combining a pencil tin and a clip on book light
- Cue tips can be used as a blending material
- Students create personalized portfolio folders by folding a large sheet of poster board
- Students can sign out lockers or carry their materials in a backpack
- Portable viewfinders can be created by hot gluing transparency film to matboard
What would you
have done differently?
My main concern that I would have liked to correct was my apprehension to interact with students at the beginning of class. I felt awkward sitting to the side and only taking quick notes for some time before I decided to interact with a student. It was only after talking and getting to know the student and soon the whole table that I became more calm and open to question them about their interests and the school itself. This also helped them to speak up towards me and give me their opinions while interacting with one another. By the end of class, my table was mare talkative and expressive while working than when they started and I could tell that out talks brought some positivity to their time.
